A short-tail keyword is a single word, like “puppy” or “loft.” These search terms are very popular, but you will have trouble leveraging them as the basis for your site because they’re one stop shops — meaning that there’s no room to direct people to other pages on your website or to guide them with a call-to-action. For example, if someone types “puppy training” into Google’s search bar, your article better have puppies in it or at least be about dog training! In contrast, long-tail keywords are multiword phrases that describe a specific topic. These phrases include words like those from the short-tail keywords, but also include words that provide more detail about the topic. For example, a long-tail keyword for “apartment rentals” might be “2 bedroom apartment rentals in downtown Miami.”

Long-tail keywords are highly targeted search terms thanks to their specificity. Because they’re not as popular as single word keywords, there’s less competition in the search results. This means that your content will receive more exposure, which is important for nurturing your audience.

Identify potential keywords by examining organic search-engine data (i.e., what people are searching for on Google). Use SEMRush ( ) to help you discover new keywords that your competitors are using and use Google’s Keyword Planner ( ) to discover long-tail keywords with low competition.

Find out if your target market is searching for the keyword by typing it into Google yourself. Make sure to type in the word in quotes. Think about what questions potential customers could be asking when they’re researching your product or service and make sure that your website answers these questions.

Make sure that it’s easy to communicate the value of your content in a few words. If you can’t summarize the article in 3-5 words, fill it with short-tail keywords and try again until you can.
